Marina del Rey, California Information
Located in the center of Los Angeles’ Westside between Venice Beach and Playa del Rey, Marina del Rey is just over 800 acres, half of which is under water.
The Southern California city was originally planned to make a part of the Playa del Rey estuary into a harbor in 1887 by real estate developer M.C. Wicks. It wasn’t completed as the bustling small-craft harbor it is today until April of 1965.
Six hotels within this contented little seaside community provide more than 1,000 rooms for visitors. Shopping and dining opportunities are abundant with nearly 1 million square feet of retail and restaurant space along the scenic walkways of Marina del Rey. The Waterside Shopping Center is a hub of big name brand stores mixed with charming local boutiques, a supermarket, coffee shops and more convenient shopping spaces. Last year, visitors to this California gem spent nearly $3 million while visiting the modern city, an increase of more than 20 percent over last year.
Many of these guests to the modern and accessible city spent their dollars at one of the more than 35 critically-acclaimed restaurants that are in Marina del Rey. The city boasts that they have the highest total seating capacity for restaurants in a one-square mile outside of New York City.
The median listing price for homes in Marina del Rey is about $950,000, which is about $600 a square foot. A home for sale spends about two months on the market before selling at right around its original asking price. Only a bit more than 120 homes are for sale at a time on average, and just about 100 to 200 apartments are for rent in this popular area. Average rents run around $2,000 and up for a studio apartment.
Fisherman’s Village – Set against the backdrop of the beautiful harbor is the widely-known Marina del Rey landmark, Fisherman’s Village. Its many amenities make it a fantastic meeting spot. Its quaint shops, numerous restaurants and picturesque views are perfect for taking friends and family for a relaxing day trip. At the quaint seaside village, you can sometimes spot dolphins and whales off the coast or sea lions lounging on the beach. The original fishing shacks and light house is a perfect place to snap a few photos and relax after strolling the many shops and eateries.
Burton Chace Park – with sweeping views of the harbor, guest docks for boats, pergolas and picnic shelters, this 10-acre public park always has something happening. It is host to numerous events year round and is a great place to host a wedding, family reunion or birthday parties at its many picnic and barbeque areas and multi-purpose rooms.
California Yacht Club – Since its founding in 1922, the members of this club have been a large part of the community. Although you must be with a member to get into the clubhouse and dining room with a 180-degree view of the Marina, it’s one of the classic ways to get to know the area. Members of the Los Angeles Athletic Club are also allowed entry to the restaurant, pool, paddle tennis facilities and other amenities of the California Yacht Club.
Marina Beach – Also known as Mother’s Beach for its kid-friendly waters and play areas, this sweet spot is a popular place for visitors and locals. A roped off swimming and wading area make for fun water play for little ones in the calm waters of the harbor. Lifeguards watch over the beach and many restaurants are within easy walking distance after a long day of water play.
Water Sports – Scuba, snorkeling, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, paragliding and paddle boarding are just a few of the many water activities and sports available year-round.
Sailing – You can either rent a boat to sail yourself or charter a beautiful sailboat for special events or just for a few tranquil hours. The California Sailing Academy is a good place for beginners to get their sea legs under the watchful eye of experienced sailors.
Bird Watching – Ballona Creek is a bike rider’s dream destination as well as for those who like to stretch their legs along this wetlands’ ecological reserve’s 8-miles of walkways. The mornings can be foggy, but egrets and herons enjoy the fishing along the banks. The cherished slice of wetlands leads to the ocean and has lush views of the area’s natural biology.
